RICHIE STEVENSON REPORTS FROM PEEL

We have just enjoyed a great days racing at Peel with 43 runners in the Walker Brothers Winter Hill League and 30 in the Junior Championship. It was excellent to see 12 girls having a go at the champs. and they all ran remarkably well as indeed did all the lads.

Star of the juniors was Andrew Newton who posted the fastest time over the shortened course of just under 2 miles in winning the under/15 age group. He obviously has a talent for the hills as he did a superb run against the seniors in the opening round of the league last month.

Stephanie Lace from QE2 also put in a high class performance in the girls setting fastest time as she headed the u/15s. A special mention in this category for Harriet Pryke running for Ballakermeen who had a nasty fall right at the start suffering several cuts and bruises. This did not deter her though and she bravely battled on to take 3rd in her age group.

The senior race saw a powerful display from Gianni Epifiani who dominated most of the race. He won by 42 seconds, a sizeable amount over this short distance, from Ian Gale and Brian Osbourne. Unfortunately opening round winner Paul Sheard was not able to run as he is off the Island this weekend. As in the juniors there was a good turnout of 6 females  tackling the 3 miles course. Cal Partington produced another impressive performance that saw her gain a top 12 place overall.

Its not very often that a race can boast 5 members of one family in the same race. Kendals John Quine, a regular visitor and competitor on the Island, was joined by wife Jane and brothers Peter, Michael and David and all got around the course safely.

Many thanks to everyone who helped today, especially Tony Rowley who spent most of the morning marking the course, and Graham Davies for sorting the juniors out and presenting the prizes.
