Is it time to stop holding races on the Peel to Douglas road?

Yes, without more marshals it is far too dangerous

No but I am definitely going to help next year

Three hundred mile champions. Peter Ryan took part in the Empire Garage Peel to Douglas for the first time on Sunday. The 2003 100 mile walking champion spent most of the race with Sean Hands, the 2005 & 2006 100 mile champion and Parish Walk record holder, before Sean eventually got the better of him. I had to see off the same challenge 26 years ago in the 50th Leicester Mercury 20 miles. Pictures below and newspaper cuttings here and here.  (Murray)

Pre-race coverage below

The Empire Garage Peel to Douglas Walk in 1961 was the first event organised by Boundary Harriers. Held every year since, it is the longest continuously promoted race walking event on the Isle of Man (the Parish Walk missed 1965 & 1966 and the End to End Walk was not held in 1993).

These photos from 2005 show the difficulty of continuing to organise events on open roads and for the event to proceed on Sunday 6 December the organisers have to have certainty that there will be enough marshals. Visit the Manx Harriers website to find out how to take part or how to help.

The three that got away – 13 wins for Steve Partington in 16 attempts out of a possible 27 in Peel to Douglas Walk

In 1983, in what was (in my view) the most exciting race of the 49, Steve (pink socks) finished behind Allan Callow and Andy Garrett (48) after meeting "hughie" a few times near the finish.

In 2003, the pain is clear to see on his face. He had pulled a muscle just up the road approaching Crosby and retired a few yards after passing me.

In 2008 he finished third behind visiting walkers Ben Wears and Michael Doyle.  (All photos Murray Lambden)
