The three that got away – 13 wins for Steve Partington in 16 attempts out of a possible 27 in Peel to Douglas Walk
In 1983, in what was (in my view) the most exciting race of the 49, Steve (pink socks) finished behind Allan Callow and Andy Garrett (48) after meeting "hughie" a few times near the finish.
In 2003, the pain is clear to see on his face. He had pulled a muscle just up the road approaching Crosby and retired a few yards after passing me.
In 2008 he finished third behind visiting walkers Ben Wears and Michael Doyle. (All photos Murray Lambden)
