MEDALS WERE KEENLY CONTESTED BY WOMEN IN ISLE OF MAN BANK PEEL TO DOUGLAS PICTURES BY MURRAY LAMBDEN Gill Stripp was the fastest local in the Flora London Marathon and she front ran all but the final few yards of the Isle of Man Bank Peel to Douglas. She has Ian Callister and Gareth Evans for company at Sandhouse Farm, between Peel and St Johns. Wendy Ross just lost out to Christine Barwell for the female honours in the Ramsey Park runs last Friday but on Sunday she stole the show with her closing surge. She has Richard Orton (43), Mike Crook (23) and Catriona Dyden (hidden) with her in Albany Road, Peel. Janine Cringle, who was the fastest woman in the Castletown Health Store 20 miles in March before running in London, looked to be running for the "bronze" medal on Sunday. But Diane Shimmin had other ideas with a storming finish to catch Janine in the closing stages. She improved by more than 5 minutes compared to last year and nearly 13 minutes on her 2001 performance. Great stuff. Christine Barwell always passes comment on how much she enjoys me taking her picture during her numerous and successful runs. At least I think that was what she said! Another London Marathon performer was Catriona Dryden, who a source had told me would not be racing again after London. Well what a comeback!
