Right; Blown out – Ady Cowin’s agony of just missing out on breaking the hour
report & results by Bridget Kaneen
On the night when the planned T.T. practice session
was cancelled due to the poor visibility, the weather improved remarkably to give a pleasantly
bright evening and even a cooling breeze and perhaps the best conditions of the summer so far
for a distance race night at the N.S.C. track.
In the 10,000m track walk, Steve Partington
dominated from the early stages from Peter Kaneen, both feeling the effects of increases in mileage as they prepare
for 50k in the Dublin Grand Prix later this month. They nevertheless produced respectable performances
on the night, with Steve dipping under 45 minutes and Peter just under 3 minutes further
back. Allan Callow, returned to competition after a long
lay off due to injury and was third man home and will have been pleased to be back in his racing shoes
again. Michael George who completed an unusual feat by
taking part in both the walk and the run just got the better of guest walker John Constandinou from Birchfield
Harriers both beating the hour. Despite putting everything in to a finishing sprint it was not to be for Adrian Cowin who missed breaking the hour by the
merest of margins, just 1.2 seconds to be precise. Andrew Boardman was the final finisher, another
walker having his first attempt at the track.
Marie Latham was the victor in the 5000m leading
home daughter Emma who was happy to record her second best time for the distance and a confidence boost
before her next big event in Dublin where she has been selected to represent England in their Annual match against
Ireland.
Rachael Franklin was the only competitor in the
3,000m and walked a steady race in her first attempt at the
discipline. With her fitness, and using a race walking
technique she would be capable of much more.
Fay Latham just dipped under 12 minutes for 2000m
ahead of Kirsty Taylor 44 seconds further back.
In the 1000m, Sinead Kaneen led home under 9 Tom
Partington, another to be trying out the track for the first time
The 10,000m run took place straight after the walks
and proved to be a very close and exciting battle early on with the lead constantly changing between the top four
runners in the first 10 laps. It was around this point that the group
was whittled down to three when Nick Percival dropped
out and Murray Lambden established himself as the man to catch. A running battle between Richard Jamieson and Mike
Garrett for second place was settled when Jamieson faded slightly in the closing laps. It was Lambden however who
continued with a season he could only have dreamed about, pulling clear in the closing stages to record a very respectable time,
just over the 35 minute mark. Evergreen Alan Postlethwaite was on his own for
most of the 25 laps and will have been pleased to get a V55 track
ranking at just under 38 minutes. Paul Jackson overcame
enthusiastic racer Michael George who would have no doubt been feeling the effects of also doing the walk in the
latter stages of the run.
Two ladies also lined up in their first ever
attempt at the distance on the track. Wendy Ross ran strongly throughout and
managed to record her best ever time for the 10,000m. Catriona Farrant also had much
support from the crowd as she finished her first track race ever, growing in confidence in
the final few laps and finishing well. I hope more will follow her
example and perhaps have a run in the Steve Jacobs mile on
June 15th which is a handicapped mile and great fun for all. Details to follow
in the on the website and in the press.
Manx Harriers would like to thank the following for
their help in organising the evenings events. Walking judges, Steve Taylor, Maureen Cox and Doug
Corkill. Timekeepers, Di & Bernie Shimell and Colin Halsall. Lap scorers, Paul Jackson and Graham Davies. The
N.S.C. staff for use of the track facilities. Thanks also to all those who came
along to support the athletes.
