English Schools Race walking and Multi Events Championships

Three Manx Harriers junior racewalkers represented Merseyside / Isle of Man In the English Schools track walk Championships at Alexander Park, Birmingham on Saturday 21st September and all won medals and recorded lifetime best times also. Rebecca Greatbatch in the Intermediate Girls 3Km walked a well paced race and bettered her best time for the distance with 17 min 46.12 seconds and continued her steady improvement. Tom Partington, son of the 1984 Senior English Champion Steve in his first year of race walking improved greatly, walking 46 seconds quicker than his previous best in a well judged race in the Junior 3Km race in a time 16 min 08.79 seconds taking 2nd place on the last lap from Jack Leversidge of South Yorkshire and closing on the winner Chris Snook of Surrey. Alex Eaton won English Schools titles in the Juniors in 2010, Intermediates in 2011 and was a likely winner in the Senior Boys race being the sole entrant, although raced against the Intermediate Boys age group where he had very strong opponents. However Alex put in a fully committed performance and was first to finish in a new lifetime best of 22 min 47.51 seconds bettering the time he recorded when racing on the same track in the British senior championship in July. Stephen Garrett and Adam Cowin triumph in the Foxdale 6

The Anna Maria Cutillo Foxdale 6 run and walk took place on Thursday 15th August in testing conditions for competitors, officials and marshals alike due to the torrential rain. Rebecca’s International Schools debut in Dublin

Manx Harriers racewalker Rebecca Greatbatch was so pleased to recieve her England call-up for the U17 International Schools Track & Field Championships that she declined her holiday to Canada which shows her dedication to the sport of race walking. She was competing last Saturday 20 July in Dublin at 3km in very hot (34 degrees) but slightly breezy conditions and with a very fast start she settled into her own race to finish 5th in a time of 17.51 and was rewarded with a personal best time by 31 seconds. The race was won by Ireland’s Sinead Burke in 14.31.16 & England’s Heather Butcher was 2nd in 15.15.17, Rebecca’s time was 17.51.07. This was a wonderful experience for Rebecca as she was part of very large team of different disciplines and she enjoyed the weekend. Thanks Elizabeth Corran

Update on Club Track and Field Championships

Manx Harriers will not now be holding a track and field championships, this is due to a number of factors. –

Changes in fixture planning by U.K. athletics and the change in permitting means that they now will only approve one competition per month at this level and only 1 championship event in the season (i.e. Isle of Man championships). This is to comply with best current practice and long term athlete development of not having children competing every week and giving the opportunity of learning the skills they need to develop fully during these years.
It did mean that due to this we had to reduce the number of league competitions to comply with the new criteria, but as we have met this criteria with fixture planning we were granted full UKA permits for the Up and Running track and field league and all results will be included in power of 10 rankings.
We additionally have also found that support for the championships in both terms of getting enough officials and athletes to make it viable has been poor in recent years as
the school and family holidays get under way in late July and August.
We will however still be awarding the Victor and Victrix Ludurom shields and most improved shields – for the best and most improved performances in each age group throughout the League.
All perpetual shields (Victor/Victrix Ludorum and Most Improved) can be returned to any coach at a MH training session or any committee member.

The club are hoping to provide another open competition opportunity in early September in Blackpool and this leaves August open for training and building towards this competition and training sessions will continue throughout the summer to this end. (thanks to Bridget Kaneen)

Sessions for Throwers during TT Week

Two 2 sessions to be held in Peel for throwers during the NSC track closure at TT have been planned. The 2 sessions planned are: Tuesday 4th June 6.00-8.00pm & Thursday 6th June 6.00-8.00pm Ideally we want throwers to notify us of their attendance in advance of these sessions so we can determine the staff requirement (if no one books in we would not open it up) and also the need for any equipment to be provided for the throwers. Can I ask that this information is circulated to all interested throwers with the request they let us know as soon as possible, or before Wednesday 29th May which would give us enough time to arrange staff. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Trevor if you have any concerns on this. Colin McMullen [email protected] or tel; 688585

365 Indoor Sessions come to a close

Manx Harriers Monday Night 365 indoor sessions finished on Monday evening after a winter of England Athletics 365 training structure for all abilities, working on fitness for all athletic events. Training started last September on all areas of fitness from floorwork and agility and strength to balance and also specific event skills in throwing, running, walking and jumping and athletes were presented with their bands and certificates.

As a coach it has been very challenging even demonstrating what had been learnt from UKA’s U.Coach web pages and videos. Colours on the scheme range from red to yellow and then green, purple, blue and black through to bronze, silver and gold, similar to the belts in martial arts.

To get this group into yellow and green shows how much they are capable of and how with more work on their challenges next winter, they should get stronger and more able to move up through the different colours. The ability to train with correct technique in which ever event they eventually choose later in their development.

We hope that the children will continue to come along to Thursday’s club training nights where they can keep getting assessed and demonstrate skills to the larger group.

It is hoped that more coaches and athletes will pick up on the 365 challenge Thanks to Peter Kaneen

365 Indoor Training

Manx Harriers indoor 365 training has been extended for another 6 weeks and the first session took place at the excellent facilities in St. Ninian’s Lower School, Bemahague, last night 8/4/13.

The training times remain unchanged with registration at 5.50pm for 6 pm. start until 7pm.

Directions – from Signpost corner travel towards Onchan on Hillberry Road until the first set of traffic lights and turn right into Heywood Avenue. Follow the road down until you see the signs for the school

IMPORTANT : If parents go through the main car park in front of the school to the LEFT of the school building and drop off at the lower car park above the astro pitch they will see signs for the Jubilee Sports Centre. The entrance to the sports centre is above the astro pitch on that side of the site. The sports halls are along the corridor – only a few metres on the left hand side of the corridor.

DO NOT to enter via the front door of the school as it is then a rather difficult set of instructions to get to the sports complex. Much better to go around the outside and enter the door on the astro pitch side of the building.

The signs should be quite clear for the Jubilee Sports Centre.

Easter Festival of Running 2013

Congratulations to the organising committee of Chris Quine, Dave Ronan, Michelle Stevens, Dave Griffiths and Nicky Davison on a highly successful and very well organised 2013 Easter Festival of Running held in challenging conditions.  Thanks also to all the sponsors, officials, helpers, marshals and competitors without whom the  event would not happen.

The Manx Harriers star athlete of the festival was undoubtedly Gail Griffiths (pictured right) – a remarkable and inspirational veteran athlete who finished 3rd  in the overall women’s  standings over the 3 festival events. Despite offering 20 free entries to club members, the uptake was poor and  unfortunately Manx Harriers did not  feature in the overall men’s or women’s team results. Gail was the only athlete  running for the host club to finish all three  events.  www.easterfestival.info

Inter Counties Cross Country

An exceptional performance from 14-year-old Katie Astin was the Manx highlight of last Saturday’s Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at a very muddy Cofton Park in Birmingham (writes Dave Griffiths). Eight athletes from the Isle of Man represented Lancashire at the championships which were televised live by Sky Sports, including debutants Jason Moore, David Mullarkey and Kirree Quayle.

Katie Astin ran the race of her life so far to finish in a magnificent 12th place in the u15 girls race out of 287 finishers, one of the highest placings ever achieved by a Manx athlete in these championships. She began sensibly, holding back a little in the early stages of the 4k race and holding a position in the mid-20s on the first lap. By the time the athletes came back into view on the long downhill section on the second and final lap, Katie had moved up to 11th place with an impressively strong surge and was running superbly. In the frantic final dash for the line she was just pipped by one of the chasing pack, but her 12th place finish was an outstanding effort. Katie’s diminutive stature belies her strength and determination, and this was a real breakthrough performance by a very talented young athlete.

David Mullarkey finished in an excellent 69th place on his county debut in the u13 boys race, looking smooth and composed throughout, and he will benefit greatly from the experience.

Another excellent performance came from Jason Moore, also making his county debut. In an extremely competitive u17 men’s race he ran a hugely determined race to finish in 93rd position, confirming his progress towards becoming a very fine middle and long distance athlete. Stephen Garrett was a little off the pace by his usual standards in the same race, finishing in 193rd place.

Kirree Quayle was another debutant, running in the u20 rather than the u17 women’s race in order to help the team. Considering she is a specialist at shorter races rather than cross country, she ran with a lot of courage and determination to come home in 134th position.

Three Manx athletes lined up for the senior women’s race, with the experienced Gail Griffiths running a typically consistent and gritty race to finish in 151st position against the best distance athletes in the country. Sisters Gemma Astin and Sarah Astin were competing in the senior ranks for the first time and started well, but a lack of recent training after injury forced them both to retire from the race. This was a day when their younger sister Katie took the family honours!

Peel Road Works & NSC Access

Please see information on the Peel Road works below for Manx Harriers members. Whilst this will not affect the main outdoor or indoor NSC access points, the rear overflow car park will be closed for approximately a week from the 4th March for works to improve it to allow it to be used during the road works as a car park for the QB public house and NSC users.

Once done the vehicle access to this area will be from the main road through the current gates (height restrictor will be fitted). The works are due to start on Monday 11th March with an initial 7 week work programme on Pulrose Bridge from the traffic lights to just before the Bowl main entrance.

This area will be closed to traffic for that period, so all access to the Bowl entrance (access will be maintained during this works) will be from the Pulrose end following the diversion signs via New Castletown Road and Groves Road. Once completed this area of road will be opened again to traffic.

There will be signage for the road closure, but if possible please can you advise all your staff/users of the changes and how they will need to follow the diversions.

When the main works to Peel Road start in May, 2 way traffic will be maintained between Pulrose Bridge and the town centre, with 1 way traffic implemented on the section between the QB roundabout and Pulrose Bridge after TT week (1 way from QB).
