Steve Taylor at the Olympics
Following his appointment almost 2 years ago as Chief Racewalking Judge for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Steve Taylor of Manx Harriers has been preparing long and hard for possibly the biggest challenge and greatest honour of his life. As he left the Isle of Man for London earlier this week he told manxharriers.com "Nervous is how I feel, more nervous than excited and I am very excited. One of my judging colleagues said to me when the appointments were announced – as official appointments go it doesn’t get any bigger than this. You could liken it to refereeing the world cup of football". The first racewalking event gets underway on Saturday 4th August on The Mall at 5pm with the Men’s 20Km followed by the Men’s 50Km on Saturday 11th August at 9am and the Women’s 20Km later in the day at 5pm. Steve added "I am very happy to see British walkers Jo Jackson (Women’s 20Km) and Dominic King (Men’s 50Km) take part and also my Irish friends especially Colin Griffin who has struggled for so long with disappointment of failing to finish and disqualification. I truly wish them all the very best." Murray Lambden interviewed Steve in November 2010 following his appointment and you can see the interview here. He was later congratulated by Olympic Silver and Bronze medallist Roger Black prior to the Parish Walk 2011 where he was also Chief Judge. Murray Lambden has posted on his blog last month at www.manxathletics.com about Chris Maddocks (5 time Olympic GB walker) commentating on NBC and in addition to Steve’s own Olympic preparations, he has been advising Chris on media etiquette and general rules and guidance notes. Good Luck Steve from the Manx Athletics community!! Italian Coverage

Steve Taylor in China
Steve Taylor, Chief Racewalking judge at the London 2012 Olympics was in China in June for their national racewalking championships; junior 10km, senior 20km men and women plus 30km and 50km men. They were held in the city of Xintai in the Shandong province and this was the second time Steve has officiated at this event. Much to relief of Steve they had great coverage of the Euro 2012 so he hasn’t missed out on that!! Steve will be back in Birmingham 22nd-24th June for the Olympic trials although the walking event isn’t a trial and sadly it looks as though we will only have one representative in the walks but remain hopeful that Dom King we get the nod on the back of his B standard 50km.
