Above is a photo received from Steve Cain of the
winning team in the Millennium Way Relay with the trophy. Obviously with Lee’s
collapse at the end of his run and visit to hospital afterwards, this is the
first opportunity to get a team photo with the trophy (actually, it looks like
the photo is taken at Marown Football pitch, just yards from where Lee keeled
over!). Left to right – Andy Quayle, Nick Cain, Steve Cain, Lee
Cain. You may also not have realised that the team originally
included Chris Cain, but he was replaced by Andy Quayle when Peel reached the
Railway Cup semi final and had a chance of playing in the Boxing Day final –
which of course they went on to win! (thanks to Dave Griffiths for the photo and caption)
Cain Army won the Mann & Partners sponsored Millennium Way relay. This dramatic picture by Martin Critchley at Crosby shows Andy Quayle setting off on leg 3 with his team mate Lee Cain collapsing behind him at the finish of his second leg. Lee spent a short time in hospital, and is now thankfully back home safe and well.
Nick Cain brought the team home on leg 4 to claim victory by just 49 seconds (photo by Martin Critchley)
Dave Griffin hands over Richard Quayle at St. Marks for Dixie’s Midnight Runners (photo by Martin Critchley)
Richard is cheered on at Silverdale by Dave Collister who ran their first leg. In a close finish, Dixie’s Midnight Runners claimed second place by just 9 seconds (photo by Martin Critchley)
One of the performances of the day came from John Reynolds who ran a superb 39m 31s for the last leg to bring Captain Nelson & the Contraband Runners home in 3rd place. (photo by Martin Critchley)
The cycling event was won by Gianni Epifani just over a minute ahead of Brian Osborne. The above pictures by Murray Lambden at St Lukes Church are of 5th placed finisher Steve Watt (left) from the Lads & Dad’s team & Mike Quine (right) who failed to finish but ran the first leg for 5th placed team Three Losers & a Champion
