You don’t have to win to be first. Join the first day of racing back at the National Sports Centre on a new surface in the historic event organised by Manx Harriers featuring international and local race walkers and a 10km run open to all.  Left to right: Russell Collister,  Mike Garrett, Martin Malone, Ben Scott and Gianni Epifani battle it out in 2008. Don’t leave it a second longer to enter at manxharriers.com  Entries close on Saturday

The roadway at the NSC should be vastly superior next Saturday to when Welshman Steve Barry broke the British 20km race walking record at the event in 1983.  It was the third year in a row that a British record had been set and you can see the delight on the face of the timekeeper, the late Kevin Madigan, as he calls out the winning time. This is a previously unpublished photo. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think it was taken by my late mother (Gwelda Lambden) – if so, she made up for all the missing heads over the years with this perfectly timed shot! I’m beginning to doubt that it could have been hers already but most of the photos I have from that era were taken by her and she did only get half of Kevin in the frame.

More stats and photos over the next week.
