 MANX GAS CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

ROUND 1

ORGANISED BY ISLE OF MAN ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION - 12 October 2003

PORT ST MARY GOLF COURSE

Nearly 130 runners raced over the Port St Mary Golf Course on Sunday afternoon in the opening round of the Manx Gas Island Cross Country League.  The entry is thought to be the highest total for about 15 years and if the league continues to be promoted as well by Graham Davies and the Isle of Man AA, then within the next year or two record fields (about 185 required) may be possible, defying the trends throughout the UK.

The women's field was particularly big measured against historical standards and, including the short course race and veterans, may well have been a record.

From Colin Kelly: the early stages of the under 9s. Eric Kelly (64) and Jack Garrett (65) resume their cross country rivalry with Eric winning by 4 seconds.

From Anthony Brand - the start of the senior, veterans and junior men.

Graham Davies had a lot to do this weekend (and indeed throughout the year) but here he takes on an additional role - a scarecrow! (Picture by Anthony Brand)

Cal Partington was going well when this picture was taken by Geoff Farrant but she had to retire with stomach problems. Michael George (106) made a great comeback to cross country 26 years after he last ran a cross country race. Also in the picture is Alan Corkill.

A great shot from Steve Partington - showing the quality of the competition. Simon Callister (42) ran well in the short course race with Julie Harrison (90) taking the first round of the women's series.

Talking of quality, 17 year old Keith Gerrard won the overall race from new resident Paul Sheard.(Picture Anthony Brand)

The "B" race. Behind the top five runners, Murray Lambden surprised himself by taking sixth with the opposition in the background. Andy Cannell (white vest) was seventh. Also in the picture are former Island Games double champ Keiron Murray, Paul Curphey, Dave Newton and right behind him Peter Kaneen who finished 8th just a couple of hours after winning the 20km walk!! Chasing them down the hill is Western AC's Phil Mackie with Richard Cooil emerging over the brow of the hill. (Picture Steve Partington)
