1984 – Manx Airlines 40 Mile Run

Dougie Corkill reported for the Manx Star:

“Scotland’s Don Richie, holder of six world records from 40 Miles to 200km, won the Manx Airlines sponsored Boundary Harriers 40 miles road run at the Bowl on Saturday.

From the gun, Richie and Cavin Woodward (TT course record holder from :Leamington) attacked the 40 miles World-best of 3 hours 46 minutes and 31 seconds, passing through 10 miles in 55 minutes 26 seconds and 20 miles in 1 hour 52 minutes 23 seconds. To have these World class athletes in a head to head was not to be missed, and the atmosphere among the spectators and officials was electric.”

The two leaders passed the marathon distance in 2 hours 28 mins 29 secs while Derek Harrison recorded 2.48.23 and Tony Varley 2.49.37 (before retiring).

Murray Lambden adds (31 January 2001):

“The event was held in bitterly cold conditions and the efforts of the first two runners even 17 later is hard to appreciate. I made a video of the run and interviewed the runners soon after the finish. Cavin interrupted my questions to say: ‘Excuse me, I’m going to pass out,’ such was the effort he had made. Don Ritchie, who was being accommodated by Phil and Ann Cain, joined my wife to be Marie, Chris and Sylvia Richard and Chris Richard for further drinks after the club dinner. I will shortly publish the photograph of Don trying, but failing, to maintain the same stamina with his drinking! Chris Maddocks and Phil Vesty also took part with Chris, who remained dry the previous evening whilst Phil was warming up for his Olympic qualifying time in the Foresters Arms, comfortably reversed the for, of the afternoon to drink everyone under the table.”
