1982 – Boundary Harriers 30km Walk
Steve Barry who later in the year was to be crowned as the Commonwealth Games champion in Brisbane, travelled to the Isle of Man for the first time in February 1982 and smashed the British record for 30km that had been set the previous year by Manx walker Murray Lambden.
Lambden, who reported the race for the Manx Star, in addition to hosting Barry over the weekend wrote: “Establishing himself as the man to beat in October’s Brisbane Commonwealth Games, the 31 year old Welshman, who already held the one hour and 20km track records and the best British road times for 7 and 10 miles, displayed all the virtues that coaches attempt to induce in youngsters, ie not only speed and fitness, but mobility and a mental relaxation which defied the physical torture he endured.” Those who witnessed Barry before, during and after the race will not forget the weekend as he beat the Welsh qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games by 13 minutes, won the race by over 7 minutes but couldn’t eat for 6 hours after the race such was the effort he exerted.
Robbie Lambie walked the race of his life to move to become the second fastest Manx walker, 2 seconds faster than Graham Young in the 1978 Commonwealth Games (split times 46.52 and 97.34). Lambden recorded the second best Manx time with splits of 46.52 and 93.54. Meanwhile, Graham Young was steadily moving forward towards claiming the inevitable 3rd place in the games team.
