Coverage of the 2004 Flora London Marathon is now nearing completion at www.manxathletics.com although there are a few more photographs to publish this week.  The provision of statistical information for the Manx media does come at a cost in terms of time I should have spent elsewhere. Certainly other publishing at the site has been impossible during the past 30 hours since I arrived back from London with a job to do and family to attend to, as have replies to emails.

I hope that you have enjoyed the pictures and stats including my picture above of the leaders at six miles. The pace and fitness of the best marathon runners in the world has to be seen to be believed and nowhere else have I ever experienced the combination of big crowds with closeness to the athletes. It was my 12th visit to the London Marathon, 5 times a competitor and 7 times as a spectator, and it won’t be my last.

Earlier pictures of the marathon

Jim MacGreggor – improved by 22 minutes in his sixth Flora London Marathon – picture by Helen Radcliffe at 25 miles.

Mike Garrett knocked two and a half miles off his official half marathon best on Sunday, although he ran faster in training several times before injury robbed him of several weeks training.  Picture by Bridget Kaneen at 15 miles.

Drink to that!  Amanda Birchall and Christina Skelly were thrilled to take part in their first Flora London marathon about 20 years after they quit the sport as juniors. Picture by Murray Lambden

Ian Callister completed his 16th Flora London Marathon but he hadn’t competed since 1995.

Jeff Looker (above) was one of many runners to knock spots off their personal bests – in his case 21 minutes. Brother Dave started near the back with the birthday cake, the sumo wrestlers and the rhino’s, which hampered his start. He managed to move through the crowds to record a very creditable  3.57.
