Kevin Deakes well and truly on the map

Kevin Deakes (above) made a big mark on the local scene when he setup the Google Earth Map for the launch of the parishwalk.com website last month. Equally well received a few weeks later was his excellent Sports Desk website .

And all this since turning 50 the week after the Syd Quirk Half Marathon. Now he has put himself on the map that really matters to athletes – the record books. In winning the over 50 section of the Brass Monkey Half Marathon on Sunday in 1 hour 18 minutes and 15 seconds (two seconds quicker if you take off the time taken to cross the start line) he set what is, subject to confirmation, a Manx over 50 record.

Kevin didn’t need a map to measure the distance of his early running as he started out as a sprinter. He clocked a 10.9 in the 100m whilst still a teenager and his best 200m was 22.3.

Not being built like most sprinters he switched to the 400m and 800m and his best times for those were 51.9 and 1:59.4.

He said on Wednesday: "Until Sunday my best half marathon time was 1:21:57 which I did back in October 1986 and my split times for every distance from 5K upwards beat my previous personal bests! It’s been a long 24 year wait although for many years in between I didn’t do any running at all."

For the record, I hope he doesn’t do the marathon again! But whatever else he chooses to do he will certainly be recorded on his website where he is, putting all the local races, and not just himself, on the on the map.
