Although it is possible to compete in many of the events in Manx athletics without being a member of a club, by paying a slightly higher entry fee, the structure could not survive without the clubs who organise the events.

Many of the club officials are as dedicated as the athletes they give up their time to support. All five of the Manx athletics clubs now have websites where you can obtain membership forms and contact their officials. You can also learn about their histories and see details of forthcoming events.  As a member of a club you share the responsibilities and are expected to put something into organising events. If everyone does a little it eases the burden on the few who do the lion’s share.

Although there are five clubs on the Isle of Man the reality is that the members of different clubs train together and help with each other’s events. Its now 20 years since I was converted to the preference for a single Manx club. The athletes came back from the Island Games in  Guernsey and asked why they did not always take part in events as a united Island team. Not everyone agrees but as a club member you have an equal say in the direction your club takes.  So you need to be in a club to determine the way the sport is organised.

NEW SEARCH FACILITY BRINGS ALL MANX SITES TOGETHER

manxathletics.com is an independent site designed, edited and funded by Murray Lambden.

The site was updated daily for three and a half years until June 2004 when the webeditor took a sabbatical. It now serves as a portal for Manx athletes with special features on a few events and ad hoc publishing when time permits without giving in to the addiction! Old features can be found by using the Google search below or by using the old features page. The clubs are encouraged to develop their own sites to promote their events. manxathletics.com will complement the coverage with statistics and extra pictures but, most of all, if will try and highlight the content of other sites and give everyone a chance to air their views on the forum.

manxharriers.com which is edited by Paul Jackson, is the highly recommended sister site of manxathletics.com
