BY INVITATION

The Boundary Harriers invitation walk, held on the day of the club's dinner in February, became the Boundary Harriers invitation meeting in 1983 when a run was added, the Manx Airlines meeting the following year and was organised by Manx Harriers for the first time in 1991. There is no run and no dinner this year but Manx Harriers welcome the Isle of Man Steam Packet as sponsors of the European Grand Prix Walks meeting.

Murray Lambden who first competed in 1980 and who has been involved every year since as a walker, runner, lap scorer, judge, referee, child minder, press reporter and for many years the video editor, republishes many of the results, comments and database of the event which was one of the first features on www.manxathletics.com

If there is no hyperlink from the year, it means I've still not published the result but it is on my agenda.

The first of three old photos supplied by Steve Partington from the invitation meeting.

Steve Partington, Martin Rush, Darrell Stone, Jimmy McDonald and Mark Easton.

The interest centres in particular on the venue - it was the only year in the meeting's history that a different course was used. The National Sports Centre was under construction and so the event moved to St Johns in 1991.

The author and webeditor (left) with one of the stars of the meeting over many years, five times Olympic Games walker Chris Maddocks at last year's Commonwealth Games. Picture by Gladys Callow - not sure why she leaned over quite so far to take it!
