First away was the combined 1km and 2km junior
races. Lauren Whelan (2km) quickly stamped her authority on the race by taking
the lead which gradually increased to the end. She was followed initially by a
group of four which broke up as first Sinead Kaneen stopped at 1km and then her
sister Bronwen pulled away from Fay Latham who in turn was leaving Kirsty Taylor
behind. Adam Cowin winner in the first race came home second in the 1km. The
multi talented Lauren won by a clear margin and surely missed the competition of
Emma Latham who had stepped up a distance. Bronwen walked one of her best races
to date to win the race on handicap whilst Fay made every effort to hold on to
her shirt tails but had to cede by 10 seconds in the end. Last year the juniors
course was found to be short this year a post race check showed the course to be
long. Times would be approximately 30 seconds slower for 1km and 60 seconds
slower for 2km.
The 5km boasted some quality up front as Neil Bates
had opted to compete over this shorter distance. Starting last he produced the
fastest time in the race but was only able to catch Robert Moore as the race was
won with the performance of the day by 14 year old Emma Latham. Emma walked the
first 3km with her coach Liz Corran but left her for dead over the last lap once
she began her sprint for home. Liz better known for her coaching and team
management skills these days came in third unable to catch Adrian Cowin who had
improved by almost two minutes on the first race.
First away in the 10km was Paul Jempson and he held
on to first place throughout to record a very popular victory holding off a fast
finishing Brian Goldsmith who has return to the sport this year after a year out
through illness.Lesley Christian and John Robinson both improved by three
minutes finishing third and fourth respectively whilst the race long battle
between Mick Holgate and Gordon Corran went to Mick although both improved there
times. Sean Hands continues to improve with yet another personal best (55.30)
whilst Kevin Walmsley broke the 50 minute barrier on this occasion. Steve
Partington recorded the fastest time by a local this year in breaking 45 minutes
whilst Ron Ronan managed to hold off his close friend Dave Wilkinson after
trailling him for the most of the race.
