70 year old Derek Harrison received a standing ovation at the End to End Walk prize presentation on Monday evening.

In 1978, I was working in Manchester for 6 months as part of my degree course and Derek was one of several Manx walkers who stayed in my grotty shared house in Levenshulme. On this occasion he took part in the National 50km championship at Trafford Park (I wonder if the Trafford Centre is now on that wasteland?). The photo has just been scanned on my new photo scanner and, although its not very flattering of Derek's style or my Kodak Instamatic camera, its one of the few pictures of Derek in his golden years. Robbie Callister on his way to his fourth victory. His last three times have only varied by 3 minutes and 28 seconds.

A personal best for 2nd placed Ray Pitts.  He has finished in each of the four races over the current course and has walked faster every time.

Women's victor Sue Biggart improved her record by over 10 minutes alongside stunning 4th place debutante Derek Atkinson.

"I've quit walking to concentrate on running" said Les Brown after the Bradford 50km - he finished 5th!

Parish Walk record holder Derek Harrison, 11 times a winner of the old east coast End to End walk, made an amazing comeback after a serious stroke.

"Minister for Fun" David Cretney smiles at Ballaugh in case one of his South Douglas constituents is about - there is an election next year!

Eammon Harkin stuck to his target of helping wife Janet to beat the official 10 hour deadline - they finished more than 7 minutes inside.  (Eammon provided the equipment results for the race).

The organising club, the Isle of Man Veterans Athletes Club had a first for a local event when they organised a helicopter fly past just before Robbie Callister finished!

Ever wondered what happened to all the old features at www.manxathletics.com when, prior to June 2004, it was updated daily? Well, most of them, including the old news pages,  are still available (use the Google search below) but, if you would like a diversion, here are a couple of links to many of the features.

manxathletics.com is an independent site designed, edited and funded by Murray Lambden.

The site was updated daily for three and a half years until June 2004 when the webeditor took a sabbatical. It now serves as a portal for Manx athletes with special features on a few events and ad hoc publishing when time permits without giving in to the addiction! Old features can be found by using the Google search below.

manxharriers.com which is edited by Paul Jackson, is the highly recommended sister site of manxathletics.com
