RAMSEY BAKERY WHITE AND HEALTHY END TO END WALK  2003 PREVIEW by Marie Latham & Paul Jackson

Last years winner and Parish Walk 2003 runner up Robbie Callister starts as favourite to retain his title in the Ramsey Bakery ‘White & Healthy’ End to End Walk this Sunday starting from the Point of Ayre at 8am. Robbie’s closest challenger from the record entry of 312 is likely to be Sheffield’s Mark Byrne, who returns to the Island for this years event looking to improve on his 3rd place last year. local competition is likely to provide some exciting racing as Parish Walk finishers John Stubbs, Mike Readshaw and Ray Pitts go head to head over the 40 mile course after finishing 4th, 5th and 7th respectively last year. Centurion John Stubbs will be looking for a quick recovery from his recent holiday whilst Mike Readshaw and Ray Pitts both enjoyed exceptional performances in last weeks 25 Km Boundary Stroll. Sean Hands is a good each way bet following his impressive 8th placed finish in this years Parish Walk.

Roey Crellin, first Lady home in the Parish Walk 2003 in 4th place overall will be most peoples favourite for the ladies title. She will need all her strength and endurance to hold off the challenge of Sue Biggart who claimed her 3rd Parish walk finish earlier this year improving on her personal best over the 85 miles by over one and a half hours. Last years race winner Gill Churcher, the ever improving Jan Hodgson and Island Games runner turned walker Jane Mooney all claimed top 12 finishes in the Boundary Stroll finishing impressively under the 3 hours and are likely to enjoy a close battle on the day. Don’t rule out second lady finisher in 2002 Vicki Rawlinson, Helen Renecle and Irene Taggart – all accomplished long distance walkers. Youngest ever Parish Walk finisher Sara Nelson is likely to have her Father Eric along side her once again as she tackles the full distance for the first time.

A number of walkers will be competing to raise money for Charity including members of the Douglas Round Table, the Karate Club and a large contingent from Westwinds. Owen Bass travels all the way from Aberdeen for the event following his Parish Walk finish in June.

All competitors are reminded that signing on is from 5pm on Friday 26th September at the Hailwood Centre, TT Grandstand.

Manx Harriers are promoting the Novice walk on 5th October.

Signing on at the Manx Harriers Clubhouse from 9.30 am for a 10 o clock start.

The idea of the event, which is aimed at newcomers to the sport of racewalking is to see how far you can walk in either an hour or half hour – you choose at the start how long.

At the end of the time a gun will go off and competitors will mark the spot on which they finished and measurement will commence.

In addition there will be a mile race for junior walkers.

At conclusion there will be refreshments and a presentation for best novices in both the hour and half hour event as well as the junior mile.

Everyone will be made most welcome.

FIRST PICTURES FROM THE END TO END WALK WILL BE PUBLISHED ONLINE AT AROUND MIDDAY ON SUNDAY
