Sheffield's Mark Byrne is about to
catch Manxman Robbie Callister at Berk, just outside
Kirk Michael in the White & Healthy End
to End Walk. The picture was taken just before 11 am
but Robbie was soon to pull away again. Robbie went
on to win while Mark faded slightly to 3rd.

Surprise runner up David Cain (163)
with Julian Thomas (136) near Jurby.
Mark Byrne chases Robbie Callister
though the streets of Kirk Michael on Sunday. Mark,
the only visiting athlete among the field, caught Robbie
a mile or so later but Robbie stormed away again to
win whilst David Cain took second place from the Sheffield
man.
Linda Shimmin - 2nd at 50km and 3rd
at the finish. Sorry I can't find a picture of Vicki
Rawlinson who finished second.
Together all the way. Joanna Revill
and Lorna Martin were together at Jurby and finished
together in 9 hours 45 minutes 58 seconds. In the background
is super veteran fell running champion and Laxey GP,
David Young, who finished in 9 hours 4 minutes 40 seconds.
Ian Turnbull finished the very first
End to End Walk in 1961 and he was back for the first
on the new course on Sunday.
Robbie Callister in action on Sunday
- no he didn't grow a beard en route. This is not the
winner but the other Robbie Callister who has been competing
as long as "young Robbie Callister" as Sunday's
winner used to be known.
There can't be many people in the
Isle of Man who have not seen this couple walking. Carol
and Paul Jempson are often seen in the hours of the
morning at the weekend, or just about any time of the
week for that matter. Paul heroically completed the
whole Clerical Medical Parish Walk course in 2001 while
Carol was one of the sponsor's first employees on the
Isle of Man.
Another picture from Sunday during
the only part of the race that winner Robbie Callister
was put under pressure. Mark Byrne from Sheffield is
closing him down in the White & Healthy End to End
Walk. (ML)
Julie Matthews (49), Dot Saunders
(79) and another hidden walker at Jurby.
Mike
Readshaw - 5th in the End to End Walk after a well
judged effort.
End to End
Walk winner - Robbie Callister (for the final time!)
Eammon Harkin had the longest journey to the
start of the White & Healthy End to End Walk
but at least he didn't have to go far afterwards.
He lives just a mile or so from the finish but he
couldn't quite walk back again - hence he appears
to be looking for a lift home in Ken Watterson's
picture!
