EASTER FESTIVAL ROAD RACE Pictures by Stan Hall, Steve Partington & Murray Lambden The start (SP)
Bray Hill (SH) - Manuel Da Silva (Manchester University - Alehouse C), who eventually finished 14th, leads winner Andy Norman (Altrincham) The leaders on Summerhill (ML) - Norman didn't have it all his own way - he was pushed every inch of the way by Paul Green (Sale Harriers) Manx hero Keith Gerrard (162) was the top British junior in the world cross country championships. He finished fifth on Friday night behind Richard Ward ( Manchester University - Alehouse D) and Bashir Hussain, number 179 in picture (Stockport Harriers). Number 156 was Tim Crossland (Leeds University - DOSS A) who finished 6th. (ML) Jane Knowles (Altrincham & District AC) won the women's race by 1 minute and 28 seconds from Rachel Woodnut (Leeds University - Doss A). Here she runs with Manx cross country champion Andy Cannell (Northern AC) who she eventually beat by 34 seconds. In the background are Paul Curphey of Manx Harriers (168) who continued his battle with Cannell to the line (there was a two second advantage to Cannell at the finish) and Andy Bell, the unattached much improved local triathlete, who was ahead of the two Manxmen at different stages of the race but eventually finished a single second behind Curphey. (ML) The old fox on Summerhill (ML) - Andy Fox , a member of the promoting club (Manx Harriers) was the top veteran by nearly two minutes.
