Another excellent race won by Pudsey and Bramley
star Paul Sheard on his debut run on the Manx Hills. Paul, who has many good
results in races across the wet bit, was unsure of the course and made sure he
stayed close to whoever was leading. Ian Gale led the way over most of the first
half just ahead of a great three way battle comprising Ozzie Osbourne, Tony
Rowley and Simon Skillicorn. All five came back together on the steep ascent
from Ceg Y Cowin to Windy Corner before Sheard stepped up the pace heading for
the final checkpoint on Mullagh Ouyr and arrived back at the finish over a
minute clear which could well have been a lot more if he had known where he was
going. The talented race winner is based on the Island for the next year or so
and will be a big boost to the local athletics scene.
Ozzie finished strongly to take runner-up
spot reasonably well ahead of third placed Ian Gale. The Onion, who was having
his first race as a veteran, had to fight off Simon Skillicorn on the final
descent, a fiercely contested sprint resulting in both runners being credited
with the same time. Mike Quine had another great run finishing 7th and was
rightly pleased to end up just 22 seconds behind sixth placed Partie. Cal Partie
also had a run and did exceptionally well to place in eigth position. She was a
bit apprehensive at the start but cruised around to record a very good time. We
were delighted to have four females running today. Rose Hooton was second
followed by Christine Barwell and Bridget Kaneen, well done to them all for
running so well.
Yet again we had near perfect conditions apart from
a strong southerly wind and a few patches of mist on the summits although
nothing to cause any problem.
Many thanks to sponsor Ian Ronan and to everyone
who helped on the day. Three blokes who I think deserve a special mention are
Peter Cooper, Allan Thompson and especially Steve Moynihan, all of whom are not
competing because of injuries and illness which has sidelined them for most if
not all the season. It does not stop them turning up to help the organisers in
whatever way they can, in Steves case for nearly every race this year. We all
know how frustrating it is to be out of action and some times the last thing you
want to do is watch others do what you can`t. A big thanks to them all
