Paul Sheard.
RICHIE STEVENSON REPORTS
The Carraghan Fell
Race on Monday evening turned out to be as hard fought and
close as was expected.
Paul Sheard recorded his third win out of three races on
the Manx fells and was certainly the strongest man on the night but he could not
ease up any as he was being chased hard by Simon Skillicorn ad Ian
Gale.
Everyone was absolutely delighted for Simon as this was undoubtedly his
best run yet and one he deserves for all his hard work. The competitiveness of
the race can be clearly seen when you look at the results. The first three were
separated by just 19 seconds, the top six covered by just over a minute.
It was
the same further down the entry as well with, for instance, 13th placed Phil
Crowe only 30 seconds ahead of Andy Gosnell who was seven places further back in
20th place. Great stuff and just what everyone needs to keep standards
rising.
Top female was Rose Hooton who was an excellent
15th overall in a new ladies course record knocking over 30 seconds of her time
from last year.
Andrew Newton was another to record a remarkably
good performance just missing out on a top ten placing, a very talented young
man indeed. There was only one other junior running. Andrew Cowley ran really
well in his first attempt on the fells. I doubt if he has experienced anything
like this before.
For the 4th time this season we had a record entry
which is very encouraging with all our top men slugging it out at the front.. It
is brilliant to have a quality runner like Paul Sheard competing in our races
and he is setting the standard that anyone who wants to win will have to
reach and there are a few who are determined to get there.
Many thanks to Buchanan and Pitts for their
continued sponsorship and to all the hard working helpers on the
night.

Man of the match! Simon Skillicorn (black
shorts) looks remarkably relaxed as he chases Tony Okell up
Carraghan in the best race to date of his fell running career.
Simon finished runner up. Tony Okell, who like Brian Osbourne
in 6th, was limping afterwards, was fourth. (Picture by Steve
