The juniors competed on the Access
Road and times were again of a good
standard. Despite being on crutches
after the cross country at Abbeylands
Lauren Whelan is back to her best with
5.33 for 1km dominating the race.
Kirsty was a clear second followed
by Sinead setting a pb for the distance.
(Winter League at Andreas two weeks
ago not included) Abbi Moore continues
to impress having only started walking
a few months ago. I can easily see her
breaking through the 7 minute barrier
by the end of the winter. Close behind
was the first of the Locking brothers
Adam seemingly finding the shorter distance
more to his liking and getting the better
of his brother Ben on this occasion,
Mathew closed the field some way down
on his best time.
Only three athletes competed over
3km two of whom were competing at the
distance for the first time. I would
have expected Callum Taylor to post
a faster time than he did but on the
day he wasn't up for it and at the same
time came up against a very much inform
Emma Latham who gradually pulled away
and finished very strongly only just
outside her pb. Bronwen Kaneen made
a conservative start and maintained
an even pace throughout to complete
her first ever 3km.
Like the senior race the juniors
had a number of regulars missing who
would have made for a more competitive
race on the day.
I would have expected to see a much
bigger field in the main race, notable
absentees from the starting line up
include Steve and Cal Partington, Paul
and Carol Jempson, Graham Young (partying
in Leicester) Brian Brough, Steve Locking
(child minding duty?) George Callister,
Dave Wilkinson, Brian Goldsmith, Kevin
Walmsley (heavy rain the night before
so likely to be fishing) and lots more.
Peter Kaneen walked better than I
have seen him do in a while finishing
9 seconds slower than last year. He
appeared to be working very hard to
maintain technique at times but on other
occasions flowed smoothly. Its always
good to see Allan Callow competing although
he looked to be holding back early on
no doubt testing himself in his first
race since the Parish when it will be
remembered he retired at Glen Maye.
Bridget Kaneen got the better of Terry
Bates in the end after a race long battle.
Both Terry and Peter were reported to
be showing less than perfect techniques
early on and should remember that if
it takes two or three miles to loosen
up then the race is not the place to
do that as we can be gaining an advantage
over our rivals and subsequently be
disqualified as a result.
Always a welcome visitor to the Island
is Mark Byrne of Sheffiled. He was 6
minutes quicker than last year enabling
him to move up the finishing order from
9th to 5th. Marie Latham was also faster
than last year but still finished just
behind John Stubbs.
I thought that David Cain in winning
the first novice prize produced the
performance of the day, it will be interesting
to see how he goes through the winter
over 10km having come into the sport
through the longer distances. He was
tracked every step of the way by Ian
Callister walking with an excellent
technique and showing a good turn of
speed. Obviously no need to be tactical
as in the winter league!?! Does any
one know the where abouts of the Willie
Turnbull trophy awarded to the first
novice in the Peel to Douglas. We are
asking for sponsors of trophies but
if we can't look after the ones we have
then its not a great advert for ourselves
is it!
Mick Holgate walked the majority
of the way with Margie Killey but this
year managed to get ahead by the line
by 9 seconds. Last year they crossed
togther.
Linda Shimmin was another outstanding
performance for me, showing great improvement
in only two weeks since the winter league,
one can for see great battles through
the winter between Linda, Moira Hall
and Karen Locking. Well done to Les
Crowe for sticking it out, Les was suffering
from cramp due to dehydration as early
as St.Johns but kept on going to claim
the 3rd novice award.
I must make a mention of my good
friend Alan Paradise a former work colleague
and landlord who showed the dangers
of bravado when drinking g&t's the
night before. He was talked into competing
by Richard Fathers at 3am whilst in
the Casino and has certainly had more
enjoyable Sunday mornings than the one
he experienced on this occasion.
Alan Pilling also improved on last
years finishing time but on this occasion
came in at the back of the field such
was the quality of this years field.
