Manx Harriers and sponsors Friends Provident International would like to welcome you to the

Winter Walking League 2005/6

The purpose of the league is to provide novices and those new to race walking with a friendly introduction to the sport. You can choose to walk either 10Km or 5Km and the popular system of handicapped starts means that everyone, fast or slow, has a chance to win. There are seven rounds in the league with the best five to count.

The organisers of the Friends Provident International walks league were overwhelmed to see a record entry in the first event in the series. A combined total of 91 walkers packed the perimeter roadway in the scratch event which will determine the handicaps for the following rounds in ideal mild conditions for the time of year. In the 10 kilometre event Neil Bates scored maximum points to finish in pole position though he had the first woman home, Carolyn Brown breathing down his neck in the latter stages. Carolyn matched her best time of the season to the second and this will be sure to rank her inside the top 5 in the UK for the distance. UK top ranked 100 mile champion Sean Hands was walking for the first time since picking up a foot injury in his epic title winning race and his time suggested he has lost none of his sharpness and fully recovered from his endeavours. Junior Robert Moore looked comfortable walking a sub 55 minute time, suggesting there is more to come over the next few months. Marie Latham also looked very relaxed throughout, recorded a sub 56 minute time despite a steady start. Last weeks 1 hour challenge winner Michael George set a big p.b. well inside the hour time forecasted after his win. Mark Harvey another well known surname in Manx walking circles also looked pretty sharp and will be looking to target a sub hour time in the near future. Third female finisher was Jane Leece who seemed to have lost very little fitness despite a lack of recent competition. Terri Salmon, first lady novice home in last weeks one hour challenge was just outside the top three, scoring good points and looks sure to improve over the coming months.

In the 5km Peter Kaneen went well below normal distance to try and blow away the cobwebs and get over his recent 50k efforts and despite a rather enthusiastic start, held on well to dip under 23 minutes. Liz Corran was next and first lady finisher, walking with good form throughout. The times are sure to come if Liz can remain injury free throughout the coming winter. Junior Ciara Kaneen was walking her first 5k for a couple of years and recorded a big personal best, going under 30 minutes for first time ever. The only other junior to walker was Kelly Worthington in her first ever competitive walk. She worked really hard and is sure to improve over the next few months. The rest of the field was a mixture of regulars and new faces, all walking well and sure to post quicker marks as the season progresses.

Just 3 juniors towed the line for the 3k walk. Lauren Whelan moves up to under 15 this year and proved that the 3k distance holds no fear for her, scoring an easy victory. Bronwen Kaneen was second finisher, recording a personal best, despite an errant shoelace causing her a bit of a distraction.  Kirsty Taylor also walked a strong race, finishing well inside 20 minutes.

Sinead Kaneen just sneaked under 6 minutes to take the win in the 1k event. Terence George was the first boy home, just over half a minute in arrears. Third overall was Katie Norris who has shown a real talent for this event, gaining great approval from all the judges on her natural flair and technical ability. Katie set a superb time of 6.39 in her first attempt at the distance. Jessica Isherwood continues to improve and recorded a fine sub 7 minute time as did Craig Fletcher. There was tight competition throughout the rest of the field with all the younger walkers showing good technique and enjoying their racing.

Most pleasing to see was so many newcomers taking part in all the events, setting the scene for a great winter of racing. A huge thank to all the very hardworking officials who managed to survive a very busy 90 minutes of frantic activity.

The next round of the league takes place in Andreas on the 20th November - sign on at Andreas Village hall from 9.30am. Please remember to wear bright or reflective clothing as the darker winter days draw in.

Junior walking training takes place every Monday evening from 5.15 pm at the N.S.C. track (track rates apply). Senior training on Thursday evenings from 5.30pm meet at Manx Harriers clubhouse, N.S.C roadway. (free . All walkers wishing to improve their technique will be made welcome.

Round 6 - Perimeter Road NSC

Sunday 19th March 2006

Helen & Joanna Clague

Small fields for the rescheduled round six of the Friends Provident International Winter walking league, although some notable performances were recorded in spite of this. The junior 1k walkers were first away and the handicap winner was the stylish Alex Norris.  Sinead Kaneen was second on a time which matched up to one her best ever. Alex's sister Katie was third on handicap and only four seconds down on her best time. Lauren Whelan recorded level splits for her solo 2km effort and she should have no problems moving up to her new age group distance of 3km.

Performance of the day came from Robert Moore in the 5km. He re-wrote his personal best and was clearly delighted with his 25.15 time. Jock Waddington was first to cross the line dipping under the hour to take the race win in the 10km. It transpired however that Michael Shipsides had walked an extra lap, part of the confusion caused by a missed start by his starting partner Mick Holgate. Michael will still be credited with full points however and must be one of the main contenders for the overall title. It will be interesting to see how things pan out in the final event. Fastest female of the day was newcomer Lindsey Kernan and fastest of the men was Michael George.

The last round takes place at the NSC Perimeter Road on Sunday April 9th at 10am, signing on at Manx Harriers clubhouse from 9.30am.  The race also incorporates the Manx 10k championships and junior age group races and walkers of all ability will be made welcome.  Round 7 - Perimeter Road NSC

Sunday 9th April 2006

Jock Waddington, overall 10K FPI Winter League Winner (photo by Adrian Cowin)

Jock Waddington took the final race of the Friends Provident Winter walking league and also collected the trophy for the overall title in the series. His final effort of the winter reduced his personal best by nearly four minutes and took him up a level in competitive terms.  Chris Cale consolidated his recent personal best performance in the Manx Open walk, though just over the hour this time. A fitter looking Eammon Harkin took third spot on handicap, ahead of John Stubbs, regaining a bit of his old form. In the final standings Jock was over 20 points clear of his nearest rival, a good indication of his great improvement in fitness and technique over the winter months. David James's consistency was rewarded with second place, despite never winning any of the individual rounds. Joanna Clague edged out Michael Shipsides for third.  Michael had in fact won two rounds, but was unable to race in the final event due to back trouble. Had he been able to race he could possibly have been a threat to the winner, after also posting huge improvements over the season. Bethany Clague and Michael George picked up the trophies for the minor placings to make up the top 6 finishers in the league.

Hilda George won the handicap in the 5km event on the day, but it was Enid Watson who collected the title for the overall honours in the league.

In the junior 1km event,  Jessica Isherwood took the handicap win on the day from Katie Norris, with Sinead Kaneen picking up third on handicap to make it a successful day out for the girls. In a tight finish for overall league victory it was Sinead Kaneen who finished just four points ahead of Katie Norris. Terence George and Alex Norris were tied together on points for joint third, with Jessica Isherwood the final award winner just seven points further adrift.

Thanks to all the officials and helpers that helped out through out the winter and to Friends Provident International for their continued support of the league.
