10Km Report & Results

There was a good turnout of walkers for the Manx Harriers summer 10k walk, which was a sealed handicap event, held around the St.Johns, Ballacraine, Hope course on Thursday evening. Fastest walker on the night and winner of the Herbie Cannell cup was Peter Kaneen who finished ahead of last years winner Michael George, though both Michael and Jock Waddington who was third would no doubt still be feeling the results of their Parish Walk exploits. Andy Green another to have finished the Parish Walk finished a clear 4th. Fastest of the females was Marie Jackson who kept a cool head and wound in early leader Sally Walker and recorded a very satisfactory 57 minute time. Sally stuck at it however and had the satisfaction of being well inside the hour for the first time ever. Junior walker, Adam Cowin started steady but wound up the pace on the final lap and finished strongly. As his confidence over the distance grows he is sure to make big inroads on his personal best for 10k. Juan Bellando similarly looks to be getting stronger with the extra training starting to pay off. The winner of the sealed handicap was Sally Walker, courtesy of her big improvement, Michael Bonney was second on handicap finishing almost 2 minutes quicker than expected. Kerry Mackey was third on handicap also nearly two minutes quicker than her expected time. There were other performances which caught the eye, Jane Foster and Adam Killip in particular showing good technical ability. It was good to see a few new faces on the walking scene. In the supporting junior mile, Danielle Oates was a minute clear from Hannah Kelly who has recently resumed training after a few injury problems.  Under 13 boy, Daniel Scarffe put in a good finish in third place.

In the 5k Alex Eaton had a couple of minutes in hand over James Green, both using the race for preparation as they along with Danielle Oates and Alexandra Ross are racing in Tullamore, Ireland next week, all four being selected for the England team in a junior schools international.

The next Manx Harriers walking event is the Foxdale 6 mile walk which takes place on Thursday 12th August watch the press or www.manxharriers.com for further details.
