End of the Road for Peel to Douglas Walk
After much thought provoking discussion and debate, Manx Harriers have taken the difficult decision to discontinue the Peel to Douglas Road walk. This is due to increasing traffic and the related safety concerns in recent years expressed by Police, competitors, marshals, vehicle owners and those responsible for organising the event.
Manx Harriers have made attempts in recent years to improve safety by changes to the course to avoid crossing the full width of the Castletown Road at the Quarterbridge as well as earlier start times in recent years but it has been increasingly difficult to manage this race on roads that are open to vehicular traffic and the event is now yet another to follow other races that no longer are held such as the T.T. relay walk and the Boundary Stroll.
Manx Harriers would like to thank Empire Garage Ltd for their long years of sponsorship and to all those who have helped to keep the event on the road for as long as was possible.
The event was first held in 1961 and the 50th event in 2010 was also the 25th to be sponsored by Empire Garage.

In Memory of Mark
The 2011 Parish Walk marked a special day in the calendar ofPwC Isle of Man as the 30 strong staff entrants remembered their late colleague
Mark Freeman, who tragically lost his battle with Leukaemia aged 50 on 10th August 2010. Mark joined the firm in October 2005 and was a fantastic man
who loved life and particularly sports. He completed the London Marathon in
2003 and took part in the Parish Walk for 11 consecutive years; finishing the
gruelling 85 miles course in 2004 and 2007. On an annual basis, PwC staff will be encouraged to enter
the Parish Walk in memory of Mark and raise funds for one of his chosen
charities. In the inaugural year PwC’s
chosen charity is Manx Cancer Help.
“The Mark Freeman trophy” has been donated by his widow Carina and will be
awarded to the member of staff who best demonstrates the values that Mark
aspired to, being personal achievement, teamwork and having fun. Senior Partner Ian Clague said: “I should stress that this
isn't necessarily about the fastest time or longest distance, it’s about collectively
doing something worthwhile and enjoyable together for a fondly remembered colleague.” photo
