Sara Killey Memorial Walk results
Double Parish Walk winner Jock Waddington won the 50km
Sara Killey Memorial Walk on Sunday in a time of 5 hours 2 minutes and 32
seconds. The 46 year old covered the route over the Parish Walk course from
Peel to Ramsey, which had been extended by an extra mile and a quarter
from last year's 30 mile version, 32 seconds faster than in 2009. Jock, who competes for the Isle of Man Veteran Athletes Club was only 2
minutes and 32 seconds outside the traditional national ranking standard for
50km - a considerable achievement considering the terrain of the course.
Michael George, who missed the start by a couple of
minutes, briefly put Jock under pressure closing to about 600 metres at Ginger
Hall, but Jock responded well to win by 10 minutes and 12 seconds. Michael's time of 5:12:44 compares to his best of 4:49:53 set in Tilburg,
The Netherlands, in October 2008.
Third place was shared by Vinny Lynch, who was only 2
seconds slower than last year, and Richard Gerrard, who was 2 minutes and 4
seconds quicker this year over the longer distance.
The women's race was close and exciting. Winner was
Shirley Gage who walked from the front with Dave Taylor, taking 5:58:50 but only
having 100 seconds to spare over Bernie Ball who just hung on from Maureen
Moffatt who was a mere 12 seconds behind
Walkers endured cold and overcast conditions at the start
followed by bright sunshine later although the leaders were greeted with
rain in Andreas.
