Can Mark Hempsall (above) stay ahead of the field? He has been voted favorite to win the Clerical Medical Parish Walk in a manxathletics.com poll.

The winner of the 30 mile Sara Killey Memorial Walk took 38% of the vote with defending champion Jock Waddington polling 34% and 5 times winner Robbie Callister taking 22% of the the votes. 6% of voters thought that victory would go to someone else.

Mark is pictured leading the 2008 White & Healthy End to End Walk at Bride but he was beaten by three of walkers you can see behind him. Parish Walk record holder Sean Hands (far right) won from Michael George (131) and Jock Waddingon (309).

To find out whether Mark Hempsall lives up to the billing, follow the live coverage of the Clerical Medical Parish Walk at www.parishwalk.com for a full 24 hours starting at 8 am on Saturday 20 June with the Manx Telecom sponsored SportIdent live timing and with photos and videos, comments and news from around the course (also thanks to Manx Telecom) . More details of the coverage to follow.

Graham Young reviews the Sara Killey Memorial Walk:

The following are the 2008 National Rankings for the 50 km walk:

1) Daniel King                     4Hrs 4 mins 49 secs
2) Dominic King                  4. 16. 19
3) Scott Davis                     4. 29.25
4 Michael George   v 40    4.49.53
5) Ian Richards        v 60    5. 7. 59
6) Steve Arnold                   5. 14 .16
7) John Hall              v 55       5.37. 19
8) John Paddick      v 60          5.37.57

Projecting Mark Hempsall's winning time for the 30 Mile time for a further 1.07 miles would have placed him 6th nationally last season.  The next five finishers could have filled the eighth  to twelfth paces in Britain.

I have not seen any rankings for ladies over this distance, but it is a good bet that Janice Quirk and Sue Biggart would top the list.  The word on the street is that next years event will be lengthened to make it an accurate 50k. with all the official requirements.  I believe the event could become a "Classic".

Congratulations and thanks to all involved this year for producing a well controlled and enjoyable event.

And finally on the walking front, Michael George (left of picture) who was 4th ranked British 50km walker last year is giving the Parish Walk a miss this year.  But the two men on the right are the double Dutch contingent who take part in the Parish Walk on 20 June.  They are Alex Wijsman & Martijn Biesmans and I met up with this motley crew in Amsterdam last October when I went to the Amsterdam Marathon with my son Ben (back to camera).
