The second round of the HSBC Securities Services Race Walking Winter League will be held at Andreas on Sunday and you can find out full details on Paul Jackson's Manx Harriers site here. Pictured above and below in the first round of the league at the National Sports Centre is John Cannell (404). John is back in training at the age of 62 and you can see him training every morning from around 6.30 am from his home in Cronkbourne Village. He is hoping to complete the Clerical Medical Parish Walk next year - the website will be launched with online entries at midnight on 1 December. In case you don't know just how good John was in his younger days then consider his time of 17.10.12 for 100 miles at Leicester on 30 July 1988. He is listed on Martin Rix's site as the third best British walker of all time at this distance. He is also the only person to have won the Parish Walk six times. He is pictured with former Parish Walk record holder Graham Young looking on (above) - more about him another day. As with Ron Ronan pictured below (289) who has probably completed even more winter league walks over the past 40 years than JC. Below these two photos you can see a page of Isle of Man Sportsmag from 1967 (thanks to Alan Franklin) and John and Graham both feature. Below this is another chance to see the much publicised photo of JC in last year's Empire Garage Peel to Douglas walk - don't forget the date of this one on 7 December. Finally there is a picture of JC after his 1976 Parish Walk win with the 19 year old second placed finisher who has been on the scene almost as long! The writer and photographer of the top three photos is flanked by timekeepers the late Dennis Lace and Ian Turnbull who also features in the Sportsmag article (that photo by the late Bill Lambden).
