Five times British Olympic walker Chris Maddocks is to present the prizes at the HSBC Securities Services Manx Harriers Open on 28 February

British 50km record holder, 2nd fastest British 20km walker

Chris Maddocks on his way to victory in the Manx Airlines 30km in 1985 in what remained his best ever time (3rd best British walker at 30km). (photo: Gwelda Lambden)

His time of 2:11:09 was second only to Steve Barry's 1982 Commonwealth Games winning 2:10:16 at the time and only Ian McCombie among British walkers ever went faster (2:07:56) in later years.  Chris also did three other 30km times in less than 2 hours and 12 minutes.  (1) April '85 2.11.43 2nd Commonwealth Trial, Edinburgh; (2) 1st 2.11.38 Sept '89 Comonwealth Trial, Roundhay Park; (3) Dec 30 89 Open Club track 2.11.54 just a few days prior to going off to Austrailia and onto New Zealand.

Chris was best known for his final Olympic walk in 2000 even though it was  his slowest by far.

Not only does Chris hold the British record at 50km but he has the three fastest British times ever (source gbrathetics.com .)

Entries for the HSBC Securities Services Manx Harriers Open close on Saturday - race walking and half marathon - details at manxharriers.com

Chris Maddocks will around for most of the day at the National Sports Centre to offer advice and encouragement and is keen to meet with people tackling the Parish Walk.

Some more stats from Steve Taylor listing his GB all-time ranking:

10km - 40.17 1st

10 miles - 67.01 4th

20km - 82.12 2nd

30km - 2.11.09 3rd

35km - 2.36.19 1st

50km - 3.51.37 1st

Chris rates one his best races was finishing second to Carlos Mercenario in the 1989 New York Marathon.  He did a high 3.11 and Chris did a GB best of 3.14.37. Among those that he beat were Andrei Perlov (Russian who 3 months earlier set a new WR for 50km  and also became the 1992 Olympic Champ) and Mauritzio Damilano. Plus Bo Gustaffson, Geovanni Perricelli etc

Finally here is the interview I did with Chris in 1997:
