Popular local endurance race walker
Andrew Titley will be spending this weekend at Château-Thierry, about 40 miles
north east of Paris, writes Eammon Harkin.
However, he isn’t there to enjoy the scenery since at exactly 2pm our time this afternoon he crossed the start line
of the Château Thierry Athletic Club’s 24-hour endurance walking
race.
The race is a qualifier for the
gruelling Paris to Colmar, 250 mile event in
June.
Andrew, a triple Centurion and eight
times Parish Walk finisher is well aware of the challenge that lies ahead
between now and 2pm tomorrow.
His target is to complete the Parish
Walk distance of 85 miles in under 18 hours and then to go to break his current
100-mile PB of 21.34.46. Since the walk is for a 24-hour duration rather than
for a specific distance, Andrew hopes to chalk up 110+ miles by the
finish.
He will not be allowed to lose focus, however, since his back-up man for the entire 24-hour duration is none
other than local athletics legend Robbie Callister.
So we all wish Andrew luck and let’s
hope Robbie can stay awake all night to keep supplying the
chocolate!
